ice dams master shake roofing systems

Winter is coming, and soon the majority of us will retreat to our homes at night, sit in front of our fireplaces, and drink hot cocoa. You may take a hot bath before bed before retiring beneath your warm comforter for the night. A winter storm may hit while you’re sleeping, but you don’t wake up because you have a metal roof from Master Shake Roofing Systems. Your residential metal roof protects you from any wetness that may try to seep in, the cold wind that threatens to come through the cracks, and any critters that are looking for shelter in the night.

A few weeks later, you notice long icicles on your metal roof. To some, these are wickedly beautiful; to you, they are a clear sign an ice dam has formed on your roof — and you need to do something about it right away.

Master Shake Roofing Systems offers a proprietary roofing system that inherently prevents ice dams from forming. In this blog post, you’ll learn why ice dams are dangerous and some tips on how to prevent them. Contact one of our commercial metal roof dealers today!

Ice dams are a dangerous sheet of ice that forms on the eaves of your roof. Long icicles hanging off your roof are usually signs an ice dam has formed. Ice dams are dangerous because they form a wall of ice that prevents melting water from draining off your roof, which can then cause a water leak from the pooled water. Other damage can appear in the form of loosened shingles and ripped off gutters. Ice dams are caused because the temperature of your roof is warm and the further you push out from the center of the roof, the cooler your roof becomes, resulting in ice forming on the edges of your roof, but not near the center.

  • Remove snow as it piles up on your roof. Without snow to melt on your roof, ice dams cannot form. Removing snow from your roof almost as easy as shoveling your driveway. Master Shake Roofing Systems recommends a snow rake to get the snow off your roof. Be sure to start at the bottom and work your way up, removing snow in layers. Ideally, you want to remove all of the snow from your roof, but if this is not possible, remove as much as you can.
  • Improve heat loss from your roof. Ice dams form because of a hot roof. A hot roof is due to lack of proper insulation in your attic to keep in the warmth and/or poor ventilation in your roof. Venture forth to your attic, and see if you can locate other places of heat loss, such as a critter hole.
  • Install a metal roof. By installing a metal roof from Master Shake Roofing System, you’ll prevent ice dams from forming because there is nothing for the ice to grip on a metal roof. Metal roofs are also less likely to leak, which is the risk that ice dams can cause.

Master Shake Roofs are designed to withstand the harshest elements, including the formation of ice dams.
