More Roofing Terms You Should Know

Many roofs can be complex in design. In fact, as a homeowner, you may not know the names of many roofing components when you go to purchase a new roof.

In this post, we’ll continue looking at roofing terms in order to help you better understand various roofing parts and options.

MORE COMMON ROOFING TERMS

Valley

A valley on a metal roof is where two angles or slopes of a roof meet. They usually form a dip in your roof.

Membrane Roof

Most roofs have a layer installed beneath the shingles to help with weatherproofing. Membrane roofing is usually found on flat- and low-sloped roofs. This serves to prevent water leaks and helps move water off the roof itself. As you can imagine, water accumulation on flat roofs is a concern in terms of leakage, which is why flat roofs are often installed in drier areas.

Strapping

Strapping is the wood that you see installed along the length of a ceiling or wall that is on the inside of the home. These are usually lumber strips installed prior to sheathing.

Sheathing

Shingles are usually attached to a roof’s sheathing, which are flat panels that help to keep the roof trusses, or rafters, spaced evenly. Sheathing also is a support system for the roof, providing much of the strength to hold it in place.

Trusses

A metal roof truss is the general name for the structure, or framework, of your roof. A roof’s trusses usually include the rafters, posts and struts.

Cupola

When most of us think of a cupola, we think of huge dome-shaped structures on medieval European buildings. Popular during the Renaissance, cupolas often serve as belfries, towers, turrets, spires and belvederes.

However, cupolas vary in size, with most being small. They are mostly of ornamental design and sit on top of a roof or ceiling. They serve both functional and decorative purposes, providing ventilation and natural light while also adding aesthetic appeal to the roofline. They can be made from various materials, including wood, metal, or fiberglass, and are commonly seen in traditional or historical architectural styles.
